Olson SLAM: Snacks, Laughs, Art & Movement Afternoon Care (Grade 1-6)SLAM AftercareOlson SLAM (Snacks, Laughs, Art & Movement) Aftercare is a fee for service program for students attending MPS Summer scholars at Lucy Laney, Pillsbury or Green. Olson aftercare is from 2:30 – 5:00 pm. Transportation will be provided from the Summer Scholars location to the SLAM location at Olson. There is no transportation provided from SLAM to home. Caregivers are responsible for picking up at the end of program by 5 pm. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ONLY A CERTAIN NUMBER OF SPACES WILL BE AVAILABLE AT EACH SLAM LOCATION. The application opens February 22nd at 5 pm. You will want to apply right away. Once you are confirmed as accepted into a SLAM aftercare location, please email summerscholars@mpls.k12.mn.us to let us know. Note: Community Education uses a sliding scale model for program fees so our programs can be financially sustainable and more equitable. Participants are asked to pick the price that they can pay. By more clearly articulating our lower cost options, we have removed the barrier that some may have felt in making scholarship requests. When participants sign up at the higher price levels, they help make the program more sustainable. CANCELLATION & TRANSFER REFUND POLICY Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, and many classes fill quickly. Contact the Site Coordinator to cancel a class or transfer to another class. Full refunds will be issued if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment. In the event of inclement or severe weather, the district will decide whether to cancel, in which case a refund will be given for the time missed. Single week AM and PM classes and multi-week classes have different deadlines and cancellation fees, see below. Single Week AM or PM Class: Cancellation requests before 4 pm the Wednesday before the class start date will receive a refund, minus a $15 transaction fee. No refunds will be granted after that time. TRANSFER: Transfers between classes can be made until 4:00 pm on the Tuesday before the class begins. If there is a difference in price between the two classes, we will automatically charge or credit the original payment method for the difference. If there is a mistake in your registration, please email senamarie.bradley@mpls.k12.mn.us so we can assist you. Only our office can change a registration once it has been made. Provide the camper's first and last name, the class name, and the needed changes in the email. Full day & Multi-Week Classes: No refunds granted within 2 weeks of the class start date. Cancellation requests on or before 4 pm on Friday, March 27, will receive a refund, minus a $50 transaction fee. Payment Plans: Flexible payment plans are available. Families may arrange scheduled payments to make program costs more manageable. Please contact the Summer Program Coordinator to set up a plan that works for you. Scholarship Options: Sliding Scale: $39 class fee/$59/$99/$29 (with payment plan) or 50% off class fee (per student) Scholarships are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, Community Education offers several summer programs throughout the city that are completely free to the community. Ones (11-24 months) Non-SeparatingOnes, Twos & ThreesThis is a non-separating class (child and parent together for entire class). The age range listed for this class is based on the child's age on the date the class session begins. Children and parents enjoy time together singing, playing and learning. During parent discussion time, the early childhood staff engage the children in planned activities while parents gather nearby, in the same room. Parent topics include child development, guiding behavior, sleep and nutrition in addition to parent joys and concerns. These classes are for you if you and your child are not ready to separate or simply prefer to stay together. ECFE classes are priced on a sliding fee schedule based on family income. With guided inspiration and plenty of freedom, try new techniques, follow your interests, and bring your creative vision to life. Grades are the year your student will be entering in the fall. WaitlistOrfield Laboratories Tour: The Quietest Place on Earth & The World's First Digital Recording Studio (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsImmerse yourself in Orfield Laboratories Inc., which is otherwise known as “The Quietest Place on Earth” (Guinness 2005, 2012, 2021). During this tour, you will experience the musical background of the building, the historic Sound 80 Studios space, which has since been recognized as “The World’s First Digital Recording Studio” (Guinness, 2005). You will gain insight into the context and mission of Orfield Labs, the world’s only independent, multi-sensory, design research and consulting firm. As you walk through the building, Orfield’s staff will demonstrate the role of design as related to human perception, in areas such as Lighting and Acoustics, where you will learn experientially about the senses as related to design. All participants will have the opportunity to spend 20 minutes in the anechoic chamber, which Guinness has deemed as “The Quietest Place on Earth.” Orfield Labs is also a Non-Profit Modern Art Gallery, showcasing Tucson Artists, Doug Shelton and Simon Donovan. Orfield Laboratories: Anechoic Chamber Experience - Group Session in “The Quietest Place on Earth” (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsExperience a silent, dark group session in the Orfield Anechoic Chamber, known as “The Quietest Place on Earth” (Guinness 2005, 2012, 2021). Defined as a room that is 100% sound-absorbent, Orfield’s chamber has been recognized internationally for its level of silence, measuring at an average of -13 dBA, with a current record of -24.9 dBA. Regarded by thousands of guests as the most peaceful of places, the chamber has become a place of silence and meditation for people visiting from all over the world. Note: These 1-hour sessions accommodate 5 people in the chamber at once. All participants are asked to remain in the chamber for the full hour, uninterrupted, while remaining quiet and still. Our Future River: Cruise through Lock & Dam #1 w/ Friends of the Mississippi River- August 4 (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsJoin us on the river with Colleen O'Connor Toberman, Land Use & Planning Program Director for Friends of the Mississippi. On this boat cruise, you'll enjoy views of the Mississippi River's only gorge while learning about the history, current state, and complex future possibilities for our metro Mississippi. Hear how we engineered the locks and dams to tame the river for industry, and about the studies underway to consider changing or removing them. You'll also hear about other planned riverfront changes and the impact that climate change is having on our river. River conditions permitting, our boat will travel up and down through Lock and Dam 1. Meet at the Watergate Marina, 2500 Crosby Farm Road, Saint Paul Minnesota, 55116. Crosby Farm Road is at the intersection of Shepherd Road and Gannon Road. Transportation to the Watergate Marina is on your own.
