Shark Bike Riders (Grades 4-6)SewardWho's ready to roll?!? If you enjoy riding a bike, join Seward Bike Sharks after-school bike class. Our goal is to build confident youth riders, build on skill-development, and have fun on the bike. We will be riding mostly on-site (Matthews Park field and paved park trails). For riders that are ready to go further we will access nearby paved trails, including West River Parkway and the Midtown Greenway, using bike boulevard streets to safely access. Biking is an outdoor sport, we will embrace all weather conditions for outside riding. Please plan to be prepared with appropriate gear/clothes to ride in all weather conditions, including cooler weather and light spring showers. If severe weather impacts the class, we will move to an indoor space. This is a pilot class in partnership with National Center for Youth Development, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit in Minneapolis empowering youth to build a community–where they can find identity and purpose–on and off the bike. Youth must meet the minimum bike handling skills to participate: -Youth does not use training wheels -Youth can use front hand brakes -Youth can control a bike independently on paved trails and urban streets -Youth can stop/start comfortably and safely -Youth has basic urban riding comfort -Youth can maintain a moderate physical activity Required equipment for youth participation: each participant must have a bike, helmet, and water bottle holder + water bottle and wear close-toed shoes (no crocs) to safely participate. WaitlistSigns of Spring: Nature Journaling at Longfellow Gardens (Roosevelt 55+)Creative ActivitiesDeepen your connection to nature through nature journaling! While nature journaling can result in lovely images, nature journaling is primarily about developing your observation skills. Instruction in artistic techniques is not the goal of this program; instead, we'll try different nature journaling exercises while returning to the same 'sit spot' each week. The park has both paved and unpaved paths; participants may choose an observation area that best fits their comfort and mobility. Stools provided. This program takes place entirely outside. Check the weather and come prepared for being outdoors. In the event of severe or extreme weather conditions this program will be cancelled, and communications will be sent. Participants must bring their own journals and art supplies. Originally designed to counter the 1950s post war suburban boom by revitalizing the city's retail core, today the second story walkways connect 80 city blocks and meander more than 9 miles. This is a great way to see the city -- inside and out -- during cool weather, hot weather, rainy days and the brutally long Minnesota winter, so pretty much year-round! There are so many treasures within downtown's unique architectural landscape, and the skyway system is sometimes the only way to see them. Whether learning about sensors while building a fish or alligator or discovering ways that gears and wheels and axles create movement while building robotic dogs or frog, your child is sure to have a great time! Whether it’s an invention to help them enjoy viewing the night sky or a creation to help deal with excess garbage students will have a blast working with their classmates as they build & explore the basics of robotics.
