Story of an American Immigrant (55+)Adventures in LearningSeptimus James Bowler (1858 - 1940) is an archetype of how hard working immigrants left their mark on Minneapolis and challenges and successes of a long life. He was a 25 year old carpenter when he emigrated to Minneapolis from England. By the 1890's he had begun designing buildings with no formal education, training or an apprenticeship with a prestigious architect. By the end of his career he had designed over 90 buildings in Minneapolis alone of his generation including two listed on the National Register of Historic Places - the now razed First Church of Christ Scientist and the extant Laurel Apartments at Loring Park. His career culminated with the building of the Mikro Kodesh Synagogue 1926, home of the largest Jewish community in the midwest at that time. Held at 1000 Oliver Avenue N., at Oak Park Ave. N., the former Mikro Kodesh Synagogue (now Disciples Ministry Church). Part of the presentation will include a tour of the building. This building is not wheelchair accessible and the tour includes stairs. NOTE: Date has changed from original publication.
