Spring is one of the trickiest times to identify trees. Learn to identify trees before the leaves fully emerge using clues such as buds, flowers, bark, and phenology, then go on a walk with a naturalist and practice your identification skills. This class includes outdoor walking. Please dress appropriately.

Late spring is the season of green delights: ramps, spinach, arugula, green garlic--and morels! Learn to incorporate these treasures into sumptuous, custard-y tarts by baking your own in class. If class is full, please enroll for the waitlist. We will contact you if a space becomes available or we are able to add additional sections.

Note: Due to high demand for our Sip & Paint: Tipsy Tulips class, we’ve added an additional session. As a result, this class has been canceled due to low enrollment, and the date has been reassigned to offer Sip & Paint: Tipsy Tulips instead. Take a relaxing creative break as you paint and assemble a spring-themed 6" x 6" wooden sign using simple acrylic techniques. This fun DIY project is perfect for unwinding and exploring your creativity in a laid-back setting. Enjoy music, sip your favorite drink, and create at your own pace. This class is open to all skill levels, and we provide everything you need—wood sign, paints, brushes, and inspiration. Follow a guided design or create your own, then head home with a cheerful handmade piece that’s perfect as a gift or a colorful addition to your home.

Transform into magical creatures and storybook characters while learning theatrical makeup techniques, face painting, and special effects. Grades are the year your student will be entering in the Fall. Learn the art of stained glass design and building with John Hanson, Owner of Longfellow Soap Company, who has been designing, making, repairing, and restoring antique stained glass windows for 23 years. All tools and materials will be provided and each student will take home a small window. Safety glasses must be brought and used while cutting the glass. Learn how to make, cut, and use patterns, cut and grind glass, tape your glass with copper foil, solder your glass, add patina to color the solder, finish the edges with a zinc border, and clean and polish the finished window. Learn how to frame your window with wood. Please wear hard toe shoes and long sleeved top. No fleece or sweaters that can catch glass chips as you cut.

Always wanted to try stand-up comedy but were too nervous to take the stage? Maybe you’ve braved an open mic or two but failed to get the laughs you were hoping for and want to refine your act? This low-pressure, beginners’ course is for the stand-up comedy curious who want to test the waters and workshop material in a supportive group environment, learn the basics of joke writing, and practice performance skills under the guidance of a veteran stand-up comedian. This class is priced on a sliding fee scale. Please pay the price you are able. This helps to ensure that Community Education can provide quality opportunities for all of our participants.

Develop your writing and drawing skills as you turn your ideas into your very own comics. Write, illustrate, and share your stories while building confidence and creativity! Explore the mechanics of the standard road bike, learn about gearing up and down, How to do ABC (air,brake,chain) checks, and how to properly adjust bike helmets and use hand signals in order to be a 'Street Safe' biker. We will start out by biking to neighborhood parks and around the lake Harriet parkway, and then work our way up to biking on the Midtown Greenway. Students are encouraged to bring their own helmet and water bottle. Bikes will be available for students who do not have access to a bike from home. Instructor: Eric Knutson This class starts on May 4th and ends on May 13th (2 weeks).
