Cruise to Red Wing & Overnight Stay at the St. James Hotel w/ Historian Dave Bredemus - June 8-9 (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsWhat could be better than a two day historically narrated Mississippi River Cruise to Red Wing, Minnesota, with overnight lodging at the Historic St. James Hotel. Travel along the scenic Mississippi River with historian Dave Bredemus passing through charming and unique river towns on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the river. The Mississippi fly-way between Red Wing and Saint Paul is considered one of the best locations in America to view birds. Mark Twain said this is the most beautiful stretch of the Mississippi River. During our cruise, we will have lectures about river lore. Some of the places we will learn about and see from the river are Gray Cloud Island, Historic Rock Island Bridge, Kaposia Dakota Village, Point Douglas, Hastings, Saint Croix River, Diamond Bluff and many more historic and scenic sites. The Magnolia Blossom is a 80-foot paddle boat, equipped with heat and air-conditioning, whichever is needed for comfort. The Magnolia Blossom has an enclosed first deck and an open second deck. We will depart from the Watergate Marina in St. Paul, with parking available. Continental Breakfast and Boxed Lunch on board the Magnolia Blossom included. After our arrival in Red Wing, Minnesota, we will check into the Historic Saint James Hotel. Dinner is included at the famous St. James Hotel along with a guest speaker to discuss the Sea Wing Disaster -- one of the deadliest events ever to occur in Minnesota. Fred Johnson a retired Saint Paul Public School teacher and noted author will join us for his presentation on the Sea Wing Disaster before dinner. Tuesday, June 9 we start our day with a short walking tour that ends up at one of the best bakeries in Minnesota for a treat (included). Late morning, we board our motorcoach bus and travel to the Goodhue County Historical Museum, one of the best in Minnesota. Lunch downtown on your own. After lunch we will travel on our motorcoach and tour Red Wing. After leaving Red Wing, we travel on country roads most of the day. Our first stop is a historic Swedish settlement called Vasa Minnesota known for its rural character and history. We will tour its Swedish church, cemetery, and other buildings. The whole town of Vasa is on the National Register of Historic Places. Leaving Vasa we travel through the beautiful Cannon River Valley with its beautiful bluffs and to the historic town of Welch Minnesota on the Cannon River. Dinner will be at one of Minnesota’s most iconic restaurants Kings Place in Miesville, Minnesota (included). After dinner, we will see one of the most historic town ball fields in Minnesota. Our last town that we will visit will be the Luxembourg settlement of New Trier Minnesota. Cultivating Your Creative Process (Washburn)Arts & CraftsCome and gather for 6 weeks with other folks moving towards their creative selves. We will do exercises of imagination and creation used by artists with a mindfulness approach. Expect to have regular quiet time exploring through guided exercises, and to connect with the larger group through listening and sharing. You do not need to be an artist or have something specifically in mind to take this class! Folks who take this class often come in feeling stuck in some kind of a rut, or wanting some support to keep their momentum going. We will work on this together! There will be occasional optional movement and low lighting, arrive scent free when possible. Cutting the TV Cord 1: Streaming OptionsAdventures in LearningTV viewing habits are changing rapidly. Streaming services are racking up a record share of Emmy nominations and 83% of US households subscribe to at least one streaming service. The array of TV streaming options can be intimidating, so catch up on the issues, opportunities, and best options for tailoring your personal TV streaming setup. The first session will give an overview of the streaming options and a demonstrate how to access the services. You can also join an optional session (register at the link below) with more individual support as you make a plan for what service matches your budget and viewing priorities. Topics will include: Pros & cons of cutting the TV cord Specific steps for setting up streaming TV for your home Recommended streaming devices & content services Streaming local Twin Cities channels Special streaming strategies for seasonal homes or cabins Cloud-based DVRs & how to avoid commercials Options for using a “smart TV” for streaming Costs of streaming TV vs. cable/satellite TV Combining streaming with an over-the-air TV antenna Demo of a typical internet-based TV streaming setup An additional 90-minute small discussion class, “Advanced Cutting the Cord: Tailoring YOUR Streaming Plan,” is also offered for participants who want a more in-depth and personal discussion of their individual situations, needs, and best options. Cutting the TV Cord 2: Tailoring Your Streaming Setup (Barton 55+)Adventures in LearningDesigned to help each participant explore & define the best options & actions needed to achieve a streaming set-up tailored to the preferences & needs for their specific household. Unless you are already familiar and experienced with TV streaming, it is highly recommended you first attend the "Basic Cutting the TV Cord: Streaming Pros, Cons, & Options" class. Participants complete a quick questionnaire prior to this class to summarize their current & desired ideal viewing set-up, in order to focus class discussion on each participant’s priorities. Although many participants typically have similar situations, class size will be limited to 5 households to ensure adequate attention to each. Common topics include: Internet service: Ensuring adequate bandwidth for streaming. Internet services & apps: Recommendations aligned with each individual’s viewing objectives? Streaming equipment: Streaming devices “smart TV’s” – pro’s & con’s Desired features: Recording shows to the “cloud,” avoiding ads, live TV vs. video-on-demand, etc. Seasonal homes & cabins: Streaming set-up which moves seamlessly between 2 homes.
