Hear the stories behind the inspiration of Vinai, the restaurant. Vinai the restaurant (pronounced VEE-nye) is named after the Ban Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand— the place where Chef Yia Vang’s parents met and the place he was born. Ban Vinai, the refugee camp, served as a place of safety, reunification, and restoration. Vinai, the restaurant, serves as a love letter from Yia to his parents. It serves as an homage to Hmong culture and history. And it serves as a place of restoration, a place where we invite you to celebrate, honor, and illuminate stories of your own through the universal language of food. Hmong food draws on the flavors of the Southeast Asian countries that the nomadic Hmong people traveled through. Our menu features modern interpretations of the Hmong family dishes Yia grew up eating including large shared mains, bright veggie sides and bold sauces. Please join us for our first tasting dinner at Myriel by Chef KarynTomlinson.Myriel is named after Tomlinson's favorite character in the novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Bishop Myriel, who receives the ex-convict and social outcast Jean Valjean into his home when he about to have dinner- instead of throwing him out, he sets the table with silver settings and invites him to join. This kindess is the beginning of a transformation in Valjean's life. When Chef Tomlinson first started cooking, she knew that she would hold this story close as a reminder of the power of grace and hospitality.
