In total, 38 planes are diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, and the hospitable residents of the small Canadian town greet all 7,000 passengers with food, clothing and open hearts. By the time the “plane people” depart, defenses are down, romance blooms and lifelong friendships are formed. Based on the inspiring true story of Gander’s unexpected guests, this joyful musical honors our common humanity and highlights the importance of reaching out to those in need. Loosely based on the 1896 opera La bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Illica, and Giuseppe Giacosa, it tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan's East Village, in the thriving days of the bohemian culture of Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008, after 12 years, making it one of the longest-running shows on Broadway. The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions. In 2005, it was adapted into a motion picture featuring six of the eight principal cast members from the 1996 stage premiere including Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, Rosario Dawson and Taye Diggs. Brought to Minnesota by her enslavers in the summer of 1860, Eliza fought for and gained her freedom through a series of remarkable events that happened right here in Minneapolis. Based on research and knowledge of Dr Christopher Lehman and others. We will visit sacred spaces where Eliza demonstrated agency, resistance and resilience against her enslavers. We will learn how this remarkable history connects to us today. And as we learn this history, participants will have the opportunity to make history (to be revealed on tour). Optional: Participants have the option to purchase a copy of Dr Lehman’s Book, It Took Courage: Eliza Winston’s Quest for Freedom. Starting SoonBus Tour: Germans of St. Paul w/ Historian Dave Bredemus - June 30 (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsTwenty percent of people in the United States are of German descent, and in St. Paul, Germans are the largest ethnic group. But because of a variety of factors, including prejudice, world wars, and the nature of the German people, the German history of St. Paul has been lost or diminished. Just as we’re all Irish on Saint Patrick's Day on this tour we’ll all be German. Learn where the Germans had their quarries, breweries, cigar factories, beer gardens, neighborhoods, churches and social clubs. See the influence of German architecture, especially in the use of brick for building. We’ll tour the neighborhoods of the Germans - Upper town, West 7th, Dayton's Bluff, West Side, Frogtown, Rice Street - and see the homes of working class and upper class Germans and German-speaking people. Learn about famous German residents of St. Paul. Germans of St Paul were somewhat hidden, mainly working as craftsmen, carpenters, and home builders, but had tremendous importance to our city, especially in the union movement. At first they were outsiders because they didn't speak English, but soon many became famous residents of St. Paul. Not all came from Germany. Some came from Austria, Luxembourg, and the Alsace-Lorraine area of France. By 1917, German Americans had become enemies in their own adopted country of the US. The German language was outlawed, and many Germans changed their names. In 1919, the Volstead act, which introduced Prohibition, outlawed one of the prime businesses of Germans: brewing beer. Today, many churches and neighborhoods celebrate their German history, especially during the Saint Paul Oktoberfest. We’ll visit Assumption Church, modeled after St Mary's Church in Munich, and St. Bernard's German Catholic Church, one of the only Art Nouveau architectural buildings in the Twin Cities. See the oldest German Lutheran Church in St. Paul. We’ll see the site of the first brewery, the first German hall, the oldest social club, and the oldest barber shop - all in St. Paul and all German. Did you know that there was at one time a horse slaughterhouse in St. Paul to provide the Germans with horse meat? See where that was, and much more. Electric Foiling on a Wake Board (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsJoin us for our Intro to E Foiling - Electric Foiling on a Wake Board! After a short intro, you will go out on Lake Nokomis and test your new skills. Electric Foiling on a Wake Board is an introduction into the fun of eFoil riding! eFoils are wake boards with a mast and foil located on the very bottom. An electric motor for propulsion is located behind the foil. Riders will learn the technical terms for different parts of the eFoil, syncing the control to the board, and starting the motor with the hand control to mount the board. Riders will also learn to accelerate to plane-ing , and further to foil along with carve-ing. This class will meet you wherever you are physically. The boards are designed for riders under 260 pounds, but everyone is welcome to try. There is no correct way to ride—even riding on your front laying down like Superman (or super person) is one of the best experiences- about as close to flying without a valid pilot’s license. This is an introductory class designed for homeowners, or those who want to learn how to complete basic home electrical repairs for themselves. Students will learn about the different types of wire, circuit breakers, light switches, and wall receptacles and how to replace them. Part 2 - - There will be a “hands-on” application in class for each student to wire up three different circuits and how to test them. Information will be presented on tools needed and their uses. Each student will need to bring with them to class a common household type pliers and 2 screwdrivers, a regular flat tip and a cross tip (Phillips) one for the “Hands-on” exercise. Fly Fishing: Intro (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsGo Fly Fishing with Derrick Hanson from "Fish the Driftless"! This five-hour course includes both dry land and on-the-water fishing. Day begins with a one-hour introduction to fly fishing where your instructor will provide an overview of the basics of fly fishing. You’ll discuss the gear, flies, and learn to tie common fishing knots. Following the class is a thirty-minute dry land casting lesson where you’ll learn and practice the basic overhead fly cast. Following the casting lesson, you’ll get fitted with waders/boots and hit the stream where you’ll have the chance to put everything you learned into practice. We provide all the equipment necessary. However, you are welcome to bring your own gear if you would like. Location: Wisconsin, 1-1:30 hr drive from Twin Cities (exact location will be communicated to students prior to event). Glass Blowing Intro: Torchwork (Kenwood)Arts & CraftsThis class is great for beginners with or without any experience! The student will learn safety fundamentals, tool and torch usage, solid rod welding and gathering, color application, shaping, and more. Students will be able to create small trinkets, marbles, paper weights, plant rods, or anything else that can be thought of with the skills learned. Class Policies: Please arrive at your scheduled class a few minutes early to fill out applicable paperwork and receive assigned safety glasses. Liability waivers and emergency contact forms must be filled out in order to participate in class. These forms will be provided upon arrival, prior to your scheduled class. Requirements: No sandals or open footwear - shoes must have closed toes and heels No loose sleeves or long dangling necklaces/bracelets Long hair must be tied back Please come to class fed and hydrated - standing is required for the duration of class for optimal safety. [A chair may be provided if needed for medical reasons] Recommendations: Cotton or natural fiber clothing recommended (It’s best to avoid synthetic clothing as it could melt in the case of an accident) It is highly recommended that you bring water to drink Free street parking will be available to all students in the front of the building.
