Rondo: Central Village Park Walking Tour
Join Mizz Mercedes for a new walking tour starting and ending at Central Village Park. Learn the fascinating history of this historic Rondo community -- how black residents advocated through churches and with the 1st black city councilman to claim the area of Dale and University to Western and University. They were given the opportunity to buy land and build their own homes which many community members still live in today!
This area has evolved since the late 1970’s when the Asian and African immigrants migrated to the states and were placed in the housing projects on this block. Today the area, especially along Dale and University which was once all black owned, has evolved into a multicultural community. The tour walks the trail of Central Village Park which leads into Uni-Dale shopping mall area where we take stops into Earths Beauty Supply store (a black owned hair store), Sun foods (a international grocery store), Trieu Chau (a Vietnamese restaurant for a food sample), and possibly inside Xia Gallery (a Asian bookstore and art gallery, perfect to buy souvenirs!)
Tour led by Mercedes “Mizz Mercedez” Yarbrough, educator, community leader, and creator of the Black to the Future comic series, blending art, history, and innovation to make learning fun and relevant.

Mercedes has been part of the public education system for more than a decade, building her experience in areas of special education and behavior. She has seen how technology has made an impact on today’s youth, which inspired her to start a new venture as a virtual educator, also known as ‘Mizz Mercedez.’ She’s an inspiring mother to four boys, dedicated to providing an enjoyable learning process with a culturally diverse curriculum that instills pride in children of color. She urges young adults to view their history using a positive frame of mind and her creativity has no limitations. Mercedes incorporates video games, comic books and animations into teaching methods. She strongly believes today’s kids hold the key to creating a better future and she’s passionate about guiding this generation to unlock unlimited abilities of their hearts and minds. Her so-called superpower, to make this change, is an infectious positivity, that Mercedes carries wherever she goes.
