Fall Forest Defenders: Spot the Invaders (Ella Baker)

Explore the parks, trails, and neighborhoods of Minneapolis this fall while learning to spot invasive plants and trees in an urban environment. From buckthorn hiding along fence lines to garlic mustard in shaded park areas, participants will learn how these species spread across city landscapes and impact local green spaces.

This hands-on class will teach you how to identify common invasive species using fall clues like leaf color, berries, bark, and growth patterns. You’ll also discover how invasive plants affect city parks, boulevards, and community spaces—and what you can do to help.

You’ll learn how to:

• Identify common invasive trees and plants found in Minneapolis parks, sidewalks, and yards
• Recognize key fall features (berries, leaf retention, plant shape)
• Understand how invasive species spread in urban environments
• Take simple steps to report or manage invasive plants in your community
