DESCRIPTION:Facing very low literacy rates\, the educators of the late 19th
century began a focus on schools and on books for young readers. Some of t
he best artists drew the illustrations for both classic tales and non-ficti
on titles. The results are books held in high aesthetic esteem to this day.
These books also provide a peek into the cultural values of the times. Exp
loring this history brings out the artistic and childlike heart in us all.

DESCRIPTION:This class explores three essential watercolor approaches for p
ainting clouds: masking\, lifting\, and layering. In this technique-driven
 class\, we will also explore wet‑on‑wet softness\, wet-on-dry sharpness\, a
nd drybrush texture. Students learn how each technique interacts with pigme

ffect edges\, and how warm‑cool shifts shape the mood of a sky. \nThrough s
tep‑by‑step demonstrations and guided practice\, participants experiment wi
th building atmospheric washes\, carving out cloud shapes\, and layering su
btle color variations to create convincing\, expressive cloudscapes. While
the focus is on technique\, the class also weaves in approachable color the

convey. \n\nThis session is perfect for beginners and returning students wh

DESCRIPTION:This session focuses on understanding watercolor color theory t
hrough the shifting\, ethereal palette of the Northern Lights. Students exp
lore how cool‑temperature pigments\, staining colors\, and granulating mixt
ures can be layered to create luminous veils of green\, violet\, blue\, and
rose. Through guided demonstrations\, participants experiment with control
 led wet‑on‑wet techniques\, soft‑edge transitions\, and intentional pigment
selection to capture the movement and glow of aurora-filled skies. Alongsi
de color theory\, the class highlights how pigment behavior influences atmo
sphere—how transparency creates depth\, how granulation suggests drifting l
ight\, and how value contrast brings the night sky to life. Students leave
with a stronger grasp of mixing expressive cool palettes\, building layered
luminosity\, and using watercolor’s natural properties to evoke a sense of
wonder. No prior experience is required\; curiosity and a love of Minnesot
a skies are more than enough. \nThis class is priced on a sliding fee scale
. Please pay the price you are able. This helps to ensure that Community Ed

DESCRIPTION:New Musical book\, music and lyrics by IRENE SANKOFF and DAVID
HEIN directed by KENT GASH \n\nA musical inspired by true events\n\nAt 9:26
a.m. on September 11\, 2001\, the Federal Aviation Administration shuts do
wn U.S. airspace in response to terrorist attacks\, forcing all inbound pla
nes to find alternate destinations. In total\, 38 planes are diverted to Ga
nder\, Newfoundland\, and the hospitable residents of the small Canadian to
wn greet all 7\,000 passengers with food\, clothing and open hearts. By the
time the “plane people” depart\, defenses are down\, romance blooms and li
felong friendships are formed. Based on the inspiring true story of Gander’
s unexpected guests\, this joyful musical honors our common humanity and hi
ghlights the importance of reaching out to those in need.\n\nMeet Community
Ed staff at the reception desk as you enter the lobby to pick up your tick
 ets. \n\nThe Guthrie Theater is located at 818 2nd St S. Minneapolis\, MN 5
5415\n\nTransportation is on your own. \n\nAfter June15th you can transfer
your tickets but no refunds are available.\n\nIf event is full\, please enr
oll for the waitlist. We will contact you if a space becomes available.
